Do people in Windsor, Essex County &
Pelee Island speak French? Will I notice the French influence in your area?
English and French are the two official languages of Canada. Approximately
4% of our
local population consider the French language their 'mother tongue'. You will find some
areas, particularly villages such as Belle River, St. Joachim and Stoney Point (Pointe aux
Roches), in our County, where the language is more regularly spoken, but for the most
part, English is the language you will hear during your visit! Government signage,
documentation, and service is, by law, in both official languages, as are road signs. You
will also find package labelling in both English and French. You will certainly find many
town and street names with French origins, as well as those derived from First Nations. |

How do I calculate a currency
conversion? Is U.S. currency accepted at stores and restaurants in
Windsor-Essex?
While shops, restaurants and services will accept U.S. currency, it is
sometimes, (depending on the current rate of exchange), to your
advantage to use a credit card or exchange your U.S. dollars for Canadian prior to
any business transactions. In so doing, you are likely to obtain a more consistent
exchange rate. If, however, you opt to use U.S. cash, you are advised to check the
rate of exchange that facility is offering in advance of your purchase.
Please note, there is a different rate each day for both 'buying Canadian' cash, and
'selling Canadian' cash, respectively. While online conversion tools make it very easy to
convert your currency
you can do it easily yourself:
Converting from $US to $Cdn: Multiply your $US by that day's rate for buying
Canadian.
Converting from $Cdn to $US: Multiply your $Cdn by that day's rate for buying US.
