“BACK TO BASICS”

8:30 a.m. Following breakfast, DEPART your hotel to explore Essex County's rich agricultural region. With a latitude the same as Rome, Italy, and Northern California, we delight in a temperate climate, with one of the longest growing seasons in the country. Essex County is quite flat, due to glacial action and is therefore home to some of the most fertile soil in Canada.

9:15 a.m. Arrive at one of Essex County's many WINERIES for a vineyard/production tour.

10:30 a.m. Arrive at KLASSEN’S BLUEBERRY FARM where you learn about growing and harvesting this delicious summer fruit. Pick-your-own and ready-picked berries are available along with some tasty treats.

... OR stop in at PRETLI'S GREEN ACRE FARM.  Choose from a good selection of farm grown produce and daily made pies, breads, jellies, canned goods and preserves. Season runs from May to November.

12:00 noon. LUNCH at COLASANTI'S TROPICAL GARDENS. Colasanti’s ever-growing facility features some 20+ interconnected greenhouses, home to a huge selection of plants - from cacti to orchids and beyond - craft area, exotic birds and animals, petting zoo, a great landscaped mini-putt course and more! The unique in-house restaurant does a delicious buffet or country-style meal where you can lunch amongst the citrus trees. (Maybe take home some of their fresh hot donuts for a snack en route!)

2:30 p.m. HIGHLINE MUSHROOMS, currently the largest independent grower of mushrooms in eastern Canada and the most advanced technically. All compost is prepared in modern computer-controlled chambers and all product is "cold chain" committed from harvest to delivery to its end user. Highline produce everything from your garden variety white mushroom to Shiitake and Enoki.

4 p.m. MALDEN VALLEY FARMS LIMITED, and a visit to their cowbarns, taking in the milking operations and an introduction to Malden’s "environmentally sound" farming system.
